Lying in Wait: Mosquito Egg Banks within Temporary Pools

Increased knowledge about mosquito population dynamics enables improved management strategies to be implemented. The adaptation of some mosquito species to lay their eggs in dry depressions that will later be inundated with water is integral to mosquito reproduction. My research at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies sought to establish a better understanding of how this adaptation enables the accumulation of mosquito “egg banks” and the potential influence of these egg banks on mosquito production. Through a combination of field and laboratory investigations I collected data that will be used to form a more comprehensive knowledge base about mosquito population dynamics.
